The 52 Project – a portrait series of my daughter, once a week in 2013

Hat – Kindred Oak  // Shirt – Zara

I can’t believe we are already at the end of this series.  In some ways, it feels like it has just begun.  I love that this project has encouraged me to not only get better at photography, but also to go out and adventure more with Rylee.  In all honesty, it was hard for me to keep up with.  I missed a handful of weeks, but as I look back on all the photos from this year, there are so many that I treasure.  It’s crazy to see how much she has grown since my first photo of this series.  I still called her my baby back then.  And now, she is my girl.  There’s nothing baby about her.  Aside from her binky obsession I suppose.  Parts of me are sad that she is growing up so quickly, gaining independence, and finally…some hair! ;)  But I feel awful lucky to be her mom….to watch her grow and learn and become her own little person.  Life has a way of just flying by….but looking back on on all these photos helps me to realize how full and wonderful it’s really been.  I can’t wait to see what 2014 has in store for us.

It’s hard to believe there are only 3 weeks left in this project.  Sometimes it feels like I just started….and yet, here we are, nearing the year’s end.  I am waiting to go back and look through all my photos from the start of this project until I reach week 52.  I know Rylee has changed so much in one short year….and I’m glad this challenge has pushed me to document it.  I didn’t capture every week….but I came pretty close!  Thanks Jodi for inspiring me to give this a shot!

So, how perfect is this tee?  I found it in the boys section at Peek, but thought it much more fitting for a girl :)  She will understand one day….and in the mean time, I will giggle every time she wears it.  Her once so chubby little baby thighs are suddenly turning into little lady legs  (that look pretty darn cute in leopard lycra).  Some days I mourn the loss of those rolls, but I suppose I’ll always have future baby chub to look forward to (yes, we do plan on more!)

I snapped these photos this weekend before Rylee came down with the worlds worst cold.  It was a beautiful Sunday.  One of those 80 degree December days that make me thank the heavens I live in San Diego.  Sometimes we wish for snow….but most of the time, we are just really glad to have the warmth.  Since we opened the shop….the weekends belong to just Rylee and I.  It’s been an odd thing to get used to….not having dad around.  But I am trying to make the most of it with Rylee.  A lot less computer time, and a lot more adventuring with my girl.  We headed down to the beach and watched the sun set together.  There is not much else that is more beautiful to me than seeing the skies turn a brilliant pink and watching the sun dip below the waterline.  And then to watch it through Rylee’s eyes…so filled with wonder and excitement.  Kids make everything more magical don’t they?

But yesterday was a different story.  Lots of tears and consoling, runny noses and pedia care.  Here’s to better days ahead.

The 52 Project – a portrait series of my daughter, once a week (almost) in 2013

I’d like to think that one day Rylee will love to create art as much as I do….a passion we can share together.  We are off to a good start!  Anytime I sit down to paint or draw, she wants to join me.  It’s always either a snake or a hot air balloon (don’t ask me why) but she love it.  One of the things I love to dream about is her future.  What things she will grow to love….if she will be into sports like I was as a kid, or if she’d rather read books like her dad.  I wonder if she will be shy and reserved, or if she will be outgoing and charismatic.  I dislike aging….it’s a fact.  And anyone who tells me that they enjoy growing older,  I don’t understand.  I mean, I get the wiser part….but older!  I’d like to stay 28 forever please.  BUT….the one part about “growing up” that I get excited about is discovering the little girl….the teenager….the woman that Rylee will become.  I am actually really over the top excited about that.

The 52 Project – a portrait series of my daughter, once a week in 2013

This weekend I got to play photographer and snap some pictures of my little sister’s sweet family for their Christmas card.  I’m by no means a pro, but I was pretty proud of myself with what we were able to capture!  Photography is one thing….trying to get 4 kids to sit still and look at the camera at the same time is a whole different ball game!  You start making noises and dancing in ways you’d never dream of.  As you can see, she has the most adorable three boys on the planet….and obviously,  they are Rylee’s favorite guys.  I didn’t want to spoil their card in case anyone that reads here will be receiving one, but I wanted to share a few of my favorite outtakes.  We had to get Rylee in there for a few.  I love that all of these little people are going to grow up together.  My older sister is due in February with her first baby girl, so we are excited to add another little lady to the mix.  Rylee is already turning into quite the tomboy with her growing love for spiderman and trucks (thanks boys!).  Love this family of mine.
