BEACHY WAVES with the XO STYLING IRON

My favorite go-to hair style in the summer is loose beachy waves.  I used to try to achieve this with a large barreled curling iron, but it’s become a whole lot easier (and more natural looking) with my new XO Styling Iron.  This iron was a collaborative design between Cara of A Fashion Love Affair, and the team at Mode.  What I love most about it is it’s ability to straighten or curl, depending on the look you are wanting.  My hair is as straight as it comes.  It’s pretty thin and super fine, and doesn’t tend to hold a curl very well.  So for me, beachy waves take a little work!  Needless to say, with 2 kids and a work-from-home job, this doesn’t happen every day :)  But the good part is that once I do it, it can last a few days with minor touch ups!  Below I’ve outlined the few simple steps I take to make this look stick, in case you want to give it a try!1_xo_8

What I use:

XO Styling Iron // Not Your Mother’s Texturizing Sea Salt Spray & Clean Freak Dry Shampoo // Finishing Spray // Teasing Brush

I usually like to do these beach waves the day after I wash my hair because I like to start with it pretty dry.  I first use Clean Freak Dry Shampoo on my roots to soak up any excess oil.  This stuff works wonders and leaves my hair smelling fresh!

Then I back comb the hair at the crown of my head with my teasing brush to give it some volume.  And usually give it a few shots of hairspray to hold it in place.

Then it’s time to curl.  It is a little different technique curling your hair with a flat iron versus a round one, so it took me a few tries to get the hang of it at first.  The key is to keep it moving to avoid any weird kinks!  Separate out a small section of hair, clamp your iron down near the root, flip the iron once away from your face, and glide the iron slowly down your hair until you reach the end.  Repeat until everything is curled!

Now I run my fingers through the curls to loosen them a bit and spray in my  Texturizing Sea Salt Spray to give it more of a natural / imperfect look.  Like I jumped out of the ocean and let it air dry (i wish!).  I just scrunch up the curls and and shake it out….and there ya have it! :)

If you’ve lost some of the volume at the root by the end of all this, just go in and back brush a little more!

I also get a lot of questions about my hair color and how I keep it so bright and white.  I have my sister to thank for that!  She’s been doing my hair for over 10 years.  I actually had her write a blog post for me about it years ago.  You can read it HERE…..and we still use the same process and products today.

Hi Kelli! Just wanted to say I am such a huge fan of your work, style, and hair!! I’m hoping you might be able to help! I just found out I’m pregnant (five weeks) and am going to a wedding un a couple of week and feel really self conscious about the current state of my hair (blonde with roots). I wondered if you coloured yours through pregnancy and if you and your sister think it’s ok? I normally go to Toni & Guy so they hopefully use decent products. Thank you so much Kelli!! So excited to buy some Rylee & Cru things soon!!! Xxxx

      Thanks so much Emily!
Yes, I touched up my roots all throughout both pregnancies. I talked to a lot of people about it and all thought that it was safe to continue to do my hair as long as the room was well ventilated!

I use the beach babe and clean freak sprays pretty much every day. I love them! I was out the other night and my friend told me I had the beachy hair everyone has been pinning this summer, haha!

    Hi Kelli,

I wanted to ask how you twisted the wand…I bought the iron and CAN’T work it whatsoever. I have incredibly long hair and it just gets caught up when I try to spin it once around…..super bummer. Can you help? Your waves look perfect!
